Weekend in Rabat

Instead of traveling this weekend, I decided to hit up a few of the other places in Rabat that I had yet to go to.

I first went out to Oudaya, and ended up taking a pretty circuitous route. I thought that a tram stop further down the line was closer to the city to take a taxi than taking one from my house, but in the end it ended up being more expensive to take the tram, and then try to find a taxi, when I ended up in a not super great part of town. But finally I got there! Got into the city which I'd been to once before, and was looking for the museum. I asked someone where it was, which I should have known wouldn't end well... But he took me all the way to the museum and I thanked him and expected to continue to go on my way.

Then the man, who seemed to know the guards, wouldn't leave me alone. So I hid out in the bathroom for 20 good minutes and he was still there! So I took forever to walk around the museum and just did my own thing, and finally he started talking to me again, but it was in a lot of Darija I didn't understand. Finally I gathered that he wanted money for taking me to the museum, it was at this point now I realized my mistake in paying for the 10 DH entrance fee with a 50 DH bill instead of my 10 DH coin (but you wanna hoard your coins so...), so he knew I had money. I gave him the 10 DH coin after about ten minutes of saying I don't understand you. I think he started to ask for more money but I just kept repeating thank you but I don't understand...

He left, finally, and I continued to look through the museum. I didn't get pictures of the items inside, it was mostly a lot of really cool old jewelry, and some Roman items.

After the museum I walked down to the beach nearby to get some sand and water from the beach. I took my shoes off to walk in the sand to the ocean and after a few mere steps, I could have sworn my feet were being burned off! I put my shoes back on and started to fill my bottle up with sand and then waded into the ocean for a bit to get the water. It's my own little panorama. I need to get some shells too. Only problem at this point was that my shoes were super wet and I had to walk all the way back up the beach in them. By the end I got sand everywhere. I had no other choice but to try to get it off and just deal with wet and sandy shoes for the rest of the day!

I walked into the Medina in Rabat and did a little shopping. I haven't ventured much off the main road cause I'm not very familiar with the area, but it was more busy than I expected given that it's Ramadan!

I bought some clothes, including three pairs of pants and a dress, as well as a tea kettle and some glasses. The tea kettle I got for 60 DH, which is still a good deal, but only if I had looked next door I could have gotten it for 50!

The next day I went out to Zoo Rabat, which is about a 30DH taxi away from the city. And in the middle of nowhere. The zoo itself though, while housing the same animals mostly as the zoo in Atlanta, was spectacular. The landscaping and lack of people was great. I walked around for a few hours and got to see some great animals!

I ended up having to take a grand taxi back into the main area, which in Ramadan isn't the best idea... but the people were very nice and helped get me back home cause I didn't know where I was really!

After that I went for lunch at McDonalds and called it a night!
